Feel like you can't get past your past? EMDR Therapy can help.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. You might have heard about EMDR Therapy, or perhaps a friend has told you about its life-changing effects. Maybe a physician or another health care professional has suggested that you do it. In any case, you're probably wondering what the heck it is, how it can help and why it sounds so... mysterious. We are here to help.

EMDR THERAPY IN LONDON, ON

What is EMDR Therapy?

When trauma occurs, the brain quickly links up a bunch of information and sometimes, the traumatic information gets stored incorrectly. This means that the traumatic events can be distressing, intrusive and feel like they are happening right now.

EMDR understands that trauma is stored in the body, so we use a process called "Dual-Activated Stimuli" (DAS) which incorporates alternating eye movements, taps or using nifty hand buzzers while recalling the events in a safe and guided process. DAS helps our brain to correct information, to reprocess the events, and to strengthen healthy ways to cope and think.

At The London Centre for Trauma Therapy, we are able to provide EMDR and EMDR consultations both in-office in London, Ontario and across the province virtually.

How Will EMDR Therapy Help Me?

"The speed at which change occurs during EMDR contradicts the traditional notion of time as essential for psychological healing."

- Bessel A. van der Kolk, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, Boston University School of Medicine

EMDR therapy is a powerful technique that can rapidly shift you into a state of health. This treatment, while extremely effective, is an 8-phase process. Clients with complex trauma will often require more time in the "preparation" phase- but just because you're not yet doing the reprocessing, it doesn't mean that you're not "doing" EMDR Therapy.

EMDR can assist your brain to return to optimal health and vitality. It can replace old, distorted thinking into new, liberating ways of seeing yourself, the world and others. EMDR can give you relief from intrusive thoughts and memories. Your therapist at LCTT will assess if this is the right treatment for you, and will walk with you through this process.

Can I Do EMDR Virtually?

Something that happened in the pandemic was that we all learned what can be done online- even things we didn't previously consider. EMDR has been found to be just as effective when done virtually- and we are delighted to offer this therapy online across Ontario!

PS: if you're one of those people who needs to see the research, the FAQs and the small print- we understand. You can head to EMDRIA's website or check out EMDR Canada for more information.

We understand, and we are here to help. There is hope and a beautiful future on the horizon.
