Starting Therapy

Essential information and guidance for beginning your journey with London Trauma Therapy.

What can I expect from my first session?

You can look forward to a welcoming and comforting experience with a therapist who’s a great match for your needs!

We know that taking the first step into therapy might feel a bit overwhelming. It’s completely natural to feel a bit anxious about opening up to someone new. That’s why our therapists are dedicated to making your first session as easy and reassuring as possible.

Before you come in, we’ll send you an email with all the details you need to set up your account and a link to an intake form through our secure booking system, Jane. Filling out this form before your session really helps, as it gives your therapist a good starting point to understand what kind of support you’re looking for and how to make the most of your time together.

Plus, we’ve put together a handy Guide to Starting Therapy and a collection of Therapy Tools just for you!

And if you’re wondering how to get everything set up, check out our quick video guide that walks you through preparing for your first session. We can’t wait to meet you and get started!

Are psychotherapy interns qualified to provide therapy?

Our psychotherapy interns are in the exciting phase of mastering the latest techniques and theories in therapy, guided closely by our fully licensed therapists!

Interns are either in the process of completing their Master of Social Work or a Master of Counselling Psychology from an accredited university. They are fulfilling their final academic requirements, which include the practicum component. At London Trauma Therapy, we only accept mature interns who have already been working in the field, typically with a Bachelor’s Degree.

During their practicum, interns benefit from direct supervision by experienced therapists and receive continual support from their academic advisors and professors. Notably, when you receive services from an intern, their supervisor’s information will be provided on your receipt, enabling you to make insurance claims under the supervisor’s name if necessary.

One of the perks of working with our interns is the reduced rate they offer, making high-quality therapy more accessible.

London Trauma Therapy is proud to be a teaching clinic. We believe that for far too long, folks were denied quality trauma-focused and trauma-informed psychotherapy because of the fear of working with trauma by professionals. The only way to remove that barrier and fear is to offer high-caliber training for the new generation of passionate therapists.

Our practice provides a dynamic environment where graduate students can enhance their skills under the mentorship of leading therapists. If you’re interested in learning more about our internship program or if you’re considering starting therapy with one of our skilled interns, we invite you to contact the Care Team directly at info@londontraumatherapy.com.

Availability of interns varies.

Can I book therapy sessions for my child who is under 18?

Yes, we offer child and youth therapy services. A parent or guardian must provide consent and may need to be involved in the initial consultation.

What platform do you use for video therapy sessions?

We use JaneApp for all of our individual online sessions, however we use Zoom for Couples and Family online sessions.

What does it mean when a psychotherapist is "Qualifying"?

A “Qualifying” psychotherapist is in the process of completing their registration requirements and is supervised by a fully registered professional. This is different than an Intern- an RP-Q has already completed 450 hours of direct client contact and 1000 hours of clinical supervision.

How can I determine which kind of therapy is best suited for me?

At your initial consultation here at London Trauma Therapy, we’ll take the time to really get to know you and what you’re hoping to achieve with therapy. It’s all about understanding your unique situation and figuring out together which therapy approach fits best with your life and goals. Sometimes, what might have been suggested to you before isn’t quite the right fit—and that’s totally okay! Your therapist is here to explore the options with you, helping you discover the most effective and comfortable path forward.

Think of this first chat as a friendly, open conversation where you can share openly and learn about the different ways we can support you. We want to make sure that the therapy you choose feels right for you, personalized to meet your needs. We’re here not just to guide you, but to listen and adapt our approach based on what will help you the most…

Can I book an appointment on behalf of another adult?

Booking an appointment for an individual over the age of 18 is possible with proper consent in place!

We value the role of family, friends, and caregivers in supporting adults seeking mental health care. However, before proceeding, it is essential to secure their explicit consent. Consent is an affirmation from the individual seeking therapy, indicating their readiness to begin the treatment process.

At London Trauma Therapy, we prioritize maintaining consent and confidentiality—it is crucial not only for effective therapy outcomes but also because we are required by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) to safeguard all confidential information obtained through our professional interactions.

Consent can be provided directly to our Care Team via phone or email. You can contact us at 226-777-7702 or info@londontraumatherapy.com. Once we have consent, we can help arrange future appointments.

If you are managing the therapy arrangements for someone else, we will also require a ‘Consent to Disclose Information’ form, separate from the consent to receive treatment. This form is necessary for any release of information beyond the client. More details about our ‘Consent to Disclose’ process are available, and the form must be filled out by the person receiving therapy.

We understand that initiating therapy can be an overwhelming endeavor for both the individual and their supporters. Our Care Team is here to assist you through every step of the process.

What should I expect from the therapy process?

Therapy is a collaborative process tailored to help you explore, understand, and navigate your emotions, behaviors, and thoughts towards personal growth. This is such an important question that we have made you a whole guide on it! Click here to view the “What Should I Expect From Therapy” guide.

What is the first session like?

You can expect a warm, welcoming experience with a therapist who is committed to developing a transformational relationship with you.

We know that starting therapy can feel a little intimidating, especially when you’re unsure of what to expect. Our therapists are here to make the beginning of your journey as smooth and comfortable as possible. It’s totally normal to feel a bit uncertain—after all, the idea of opening up to someone new can seem, well, a bit awkward at first. But rest assured, we’re here to help ease you into the process with care and understanding.

Before your first session, we’ll send you an email with everything you need, including a link to create your account and an intake form through our secure booking system, Jane. We kindly ask that you complete this form ahead of time—it helps your therapist get a clearer picture of how to best support you, so you can make the most of your session.

We’ve also put together a helpful Welcome Package- so grab a copy here!

Is a free 15-minute consultation available before I book a session?

A complimentary consultation call  is a fantastic way to connect with a therapist and get a feel for their style and approach before diving into therapy.

This is your chance to share a little about yourself, what’s bringing you to therapy, and ask any important questions you might have for your potential therapist.

While there’s no formal limit to how many Meet-and-Greets you can book, we recommend keeping it to two or three. We know that too many choices can sometimes be overwhelming, and our Care Team is here to help guide you through the process.

If you’d like help matching with a therapist, you can fill out our quick matching questionnaire, and we’ll offer a personalized recommendation.

If you have a consultation call booked, here is a handy video on how to best prepare for your call in order to make the most of your time!

How long will I be in therapy for?

The length of therapy depends on your individual needs and circumstances.

For some, therapy may be brief, focusing on a specific issue over just a few sessions, while others may choose to work through deeper, long-standing concerns over several months or even years. Whether you’re looking for short-term support to address an immediate challenge or you want to dive into exploring childhood experiences and underlying patterns, the choice is yours.

When you meet with your therapist, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss your goals and what you’re hoping to achieve. No matter the type of therapy or reason for seeking it, remember that you’re in control of the process. You decide when it’s time to pause or conclude therapy—your journey moves at your pace.

We like to mention this, however: we are not a one-session clinic promising any gimmick. Our therapists are all attachment-based professionals who are trained to treat issues through a nurturing, supportive relationship. It takes time to learn new patterns, so please give yourself the gift of the process.

How can I choose the right therapist at your clinic?

The most important factor for success in therapy is finding a therapist who feels like the right fit. Here’s how we help you do just that.

Research shows that the key to effective therapy isn’t necessarily the therapist’s approach, background, or even their years of experience. The real game-changer is whether you feel connected and understood by your therapist.

Here are some signs that you’ve found the right fit:

  • You feel heard and understood.
  • You don’t feel judged, ashamed, or embarrassed.
  • The focus is on you and your life.
  • Your therapist introduces new perspectives that resonate with you.
  • The pace feels comfortable and suited to your needs.

Our Care Team is dedicated to helping you find that perfect match. We take the time to connect with you one-on-one to get a sense of what kind of support you’re looking for. By filling out our Questionnaire, you can share your preferences and let us know what kind of therapist would be the best fit for you. It’s your therapy journey, and your voice matters in choosing the therapist who feels right for you.

At London Trauma Therapy, we have a diverse team of professionals with a wide range of experiences and specialties, ready to meet your unique needs.

Not sure where to start? Our Care team is here to help guide you through your options! Feel free to reach out to us at info@londontraumatherapy.com, or call us at 226-777-7702. We’re here to make sure you feel supported every step of the way.

What's the difference between a Registered Social Worker and a Registered Psychotherapist?

In Ontario, the main differences between a Registered Social Worker (RSW), a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), a Psychologist, and a Psychiatrist center around their education, scope of practice, and ability to diagnose and prescribe medication:

Registered Social Worker (RSW)

  • Education: Typically requires a Bachelor or Master of Social Work degree from an accredited university program.
  • Scope of Practice: Provides counseling, psychotherapy, and support to help individuals manage various life challenges. RSWs are trained to address social, emotional, and mental health issues from a holistic and systemic perspective.
  • Regulation: Registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
  • Diagnosis & Prescription: RSWs can assess mental health issues but cannot diagnose mental disorders or prescribe medication.

Registered Psychotherapist (RP)

  • Education: Must complete a recognized psychotherapy program, which may vary in length and content. Many have a Master’s degree in counseling, psychotherapy, or a related field.
  • Scope of Practice: Specializes in psychotherapy, working with individuals, couples, families, or groups to address emotional and mental health concerns through talk therapy and other therapeutic approaches.
  • Regulation: Registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
  • Diagnosis & Prescription: RPs do not diagnose mental disorders or prescribe medication. They focus on therapeutic interventions and helping clients achieve emotional well-being.

Psychologist

  • Education: Requires a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) in psychology for full practice rights or a Master’s degree for a psychological associate designation.
  • Scope of Practice: Psychologists are trained in assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental health issues. They often use evidence-based therapeutic approaches and can conduct psychological testing.
  • Regulation: Registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO).
  • Diagnosis & Prescription: Psychologists can diagnose mental disorders but cannot prescribe medication.

Psychiatrist

  • Education: A medical doctor (MD) who has completed specialized training in psychiatry after obtaining a medical degree.
  • Scope of Practice: Psychiatrists are trained to assess, diagnose, and treat complex mental health disorders, often working with more severe or chronic mental illnesses. They can offer psychotherapy, but their primary role often includes medication management and other medical interventions.
  • Regulation: Registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO).
  • Diagnosis & Prescription: Psychiatrists can diagnose mental disorders and prescribe medication, as they have medical training.

In summary:

  • RSWs and RPs focus on therapeutic support and counseling but cannot diagnose or prescribe medication.
  • Psychologists can diagnose mental health issues but do not prescribe medication.
  • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can both diagnose and prescribe medication for mental health conditions.
