EMDR Therapy in London, ON
EMDR therapy is a powerful technique that can rapidly shift you into a state of health.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. You might have heard about EMDR Therapy, or perhaps a friend has told you about its life-changing effects. Maybe a physician or another health care professional has suggested that you do it. In any case, you’re probably wondering what the heck it is, how it can help and why it sounds so… mysterious. We are here to help.
What is EMDR Therapy?
When trauma occurs, the brain quickly links up a bunch of information and sometimes, the traumatic information gets stored incorrectly. This means that the traumatic events can be distressing, intrusive and feel like they are happening right now.
EMDR understands that trauma is stored in the body, so we use a process called “Dual-Activated Stimuli” (DAS) which incorporates alternating eye movements, taps or using nifty hand buzzers while recalling the events in a safe and guided process. DAS helps our brain to correct information, to reprocess the events, and to strengthen healthy ways to cope and think.
At The London Centre for Trauma Therapy, we are able to provide EMDR and EMDR consultations both in-office in London, Ontario and across the province virtually.
Common Issues Addressed in Therapy
Anxiety & Depression
Feeling overwhelmed, on edge, or weighed down with sadness? You’re not alone. Anxiety and depression can make even the simplest things feel like a mountain to climb. Therapy provides a supportive environment to explore these feelings, understand their roots, and discover new ways to find calm, joy, and balance.
Grief & Loss
Loss can shake us to our core, whether it’s the death of a loved one, a relationship ending, or life not turning out as expected. Therapy is a gentle space to process your grief, honor what you’ve lost, and slowly find a way to move forward with the love and memories you carry.
Life Transitions
Big changes can be exciting, but they can also bring stress, uncertainty, and fear. Whether you’re navigating a career shift, moving to a new place, starting a new chapter, or adjusting to something unexpected, therapy can help you process these transitions and find your footing as you embrace what’s next.
Substance Use
Struggling with substance use can feel like you’re caught in a cycle that’s hard to break. In therapy, we’ll look at the underlying issues fueling your struggles, explore healthier coping mechanisms, and help you reclaim control over your choices so you can build a life that feels more in alignment with your goals and values.
Eating Disorders
If thoughts about food, body image, or weight are consuming you, therapy offers a non-judgmental place to talk about it. Together, we’ll explore what’s really going on beneath the surface and work on building a healthier relationship with yourself, your body, and food, leading to a path of healing and self-acceptance.
Relationships
Relationships can be the source of our greatest joy and our deepest pain. Whether you’re dealing with family conflict, friendship struggles, or challenges in your romantic relationship, therapy provides tools to improve communication and strengthen connections.
